CHAPTER SIXTEEN

When Zoey stepped through the portal, Danica was again surprised at how much effort the younger woman had put into her looks. She was dressed as if she was an attendee at the expo rather than a guest, wearing something that had to have been inspired by an anime show.

Danica didn’t recognize the character, but the heavy boots, torn leggings, ripped skirt, and crop top seemed to fit some anime post-apocalyptic media property. Her hair was up in high ponytails, and her makeup was severe and strange.

She quipped, “Your parents let you leave the house like that?”

Zoey laughed. “At least all the things that are supposed to be covered are covered. I’m sure they’re happy about that.”

Jilly asked, “Are there times they’re not?”

Danica replied, “Zoey, don’t answer that. Jilly, don’t ask questions. Both of you, let’s get to the show.”

Danica’s troublemakers laughed at that as she opened a portal to the venue. They walked in through one of the side doors Voltaic was worried about to avoid the security scanners. Danica was already in disguise, and once Alex arrived, she would cover her as well.

It was logical to think their enemies might know their appearances, so hiding would give them a potential advantage. They couldn’t all hide since anyone hunting them would know they were guarding Zoey, so Randall was the obvious confirmation of their presence. Visible deterrent and bait in a trap. It wasn’t the first time he’d played that role for the team, and he seemed to enjoy it.

The fan expo filled three huge rooms plus several smaller ones for panel discussions and presentations. One room was set up for photo opportunities with themed backdrops, a large section of ribbon-lined queues to control the crowd, and other assorted and related amenities. Another was set up with tables for autographs positioned one beside the next, again with backdrops indicating who was in each.

That one didn’t seem to have clear traffic control, which worried Danica until she asked a worker about it, and they assured her it was on its way. As the man walked away, Danica called, “It needs to be ready before the people get here.” He waved over his head.

Over the comm, Voltaic observed, “You seem nervous, boss.”

“Look at this place. I have a reason to be nervous.”

Zoey suddenly bolted ahead, yelling, “They got the game area set up!”

Danica jogged after her, knowing that Jilly was flying over Zoey's head and would handle any immediate danger in the far room. When she arrived, she saw what Zoey meant.

The younger woman stood in the middle of twenty-four desks. Two had a small lane between them to allow access and egress from the middle, but they were otherwise equidistant from one another. Each had a chessboard with the pieces in base position.

“What’s the deal?”

Zoey replied, “Two other people and I will play games against twenty-four others. Our opponents are local, regional, and national chess champions. They’re all really good, in other words.”

“And the other two with you?”

“One was a world champ.
